#RapeCulture Indian Politician Asha Mirje: Delhi gang-rape victim had only herself to blame for the sexual assault

Image

So far it has been high-profile men who have embarrassed themselves by painting rape victims with a particular brush.

Now a woman – Maharashtra State Women’s Commission member Asha Mirje – has joined that infamous list.

Mirje, who is also an NCP member, claimed the Delhi gang-rape victim had only herself to blame for the sexual assault.

“Did Nirbhaya really have go to watch a movie at 11 in the night with her friend? Take the Shakti Mills gang-rape case. Why did the victim go to such an isolated spot at 6pm?” Mirje asked at a gathering of the NCP women’s wing in Nagpur.

“We have to be careful. We have to ask ourselves, where am I going, with whom am I going, what am I going for, do I really need to go to that place,” she added.

The NCP women’s wing is headed by party president Sharad Pawar’s daughter, Supriya Sule.

At the time Mirje made the controversial speech, Sule was present on the dais. However, Sule, who has taken up the cause of atrocities on women, did not try to stop Mirje from making such comments.

Mirje did not stop on that note, either. According to her, sexual assaults on women take place due to three reasons – a woman’s clothes, her behaviour and her presence in inappropriate places.

“Due to these reasons a woman has to think whether, mistakenly, she is not inviting or inviting (to sexual assault),” Mirje said.

NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik, when contacted, tried to play it safe by saying Mirje’s remarks were not the party’s official position.

“I have not heard it (the comment) and I am not aware of it. But if she did make such a statement it is her own personal opinion and not the party’s,” Malik said.

#Justice4daisy Daisy Coleman Suspect Not Charged With Sexual Assault

Matthew Barnett and his friend Jordan Zech allegedly gave Daisy Coleman (age 14)  and Paige Parkhurst (age 13) alcohol and raped them  in his home then dumped Daisy on her front lawn in the freezing cold in January of 2012. Daisy and her mom went to the police, but for what people believe is political pressure from Matt’s well-connected family, the charges were dropped. The prosecutor of Nodaway County claims Daisy and her mom refused to cooperate with the investigation and they were “going to take the 5th.” Melinda Coleman calls this a lie.

In October, Daisy and her mom went to the media and told her story. It started with The Kansas City Star and quickly spread everywhere. (Paige and her mom went to the media a few days later) International media camped out in the small town of Maryville. The Nodaway County Prosecutor, Robert Rice, announced in a press conference an independent party has been asked to re-investigate this case. The same week there was a big rally in Maryville demanding justice for these two young victims.

Daily Mail: Revealed, shocking tweets at the center of a SECOND #Steubenville rape claim

Trial by social media: The messages over Twitter, Instagram and text that were exchanged on the night of the rape and the following day were central to the case - and to the outrage it has caused nationwide

Trial by social media: The messages over Twitter, Instagram and text that were exchanged on the night of the rape and the following day were central to the case – and to the outrage it has caused nationwide

Shocking tweets at the center of a SECOND alleged rape involving boys at Steubenville High School can be revealed today.

The messages, between Steubenville High School ‘Big Red’ athletes, were posted in the aftermath of a house party held four months before the now infamous case which scandalized America when it came to trial in March.

Then, star football players Trent Mays, 16, and Ma’lik Richmond, 17, were found guilty of raping a catastrophically drunk 16-year-old girl in a night of back to back house parties in August last year.

Callous and incriminating? Tweets exchanged in April 2012 between members of Steubenville High’s ‘rape team’ appear to refer to a second reported ‘rape’

Prosecutors told how the defendants treated their victim ‘like a ragdoll,’ dragging her from party to party, photographing her, abusing her and denigrating her through social media.

Now, tweets posted in April 2012 appear to discuss an earlier assault and a second victim of the group of baseball players, footballers and wrestlers, known locally as the ‘Rape Crew’ – supposedly a reference to Big Red teams’ field domination.

In one series of tweets baseball player John Linn, wrote: ‘…I still got a nice buzz now from last night.’ He added, ‘Glad I wasn’t involved in all that sick s***.’

A retweet of a comment by wrestler Jake Howarth, at whose home one of the August house parties was held, read: ‘That one girl’s life might be ruined after all that!’

Chilling echoes: The teammates’ April tweets are horribly reminiscent of those exposed in the first rape scandal in March

Another tweet read simply: ‘First degree rape @luckyMcClurg134 lmao.’

In reponse to Linn’s tweet: ‘It wasn’t rape they were just making love!!’ Howarth urged: ‘Stfu (shut the f*** up) seriously.’

MailOnline was the first to report the existence of a second victim. She was  just 14 at the time of the alleged assault which took place at a Prom party understood to have been held at Big Red Coach Joe Pierro’s home.

The girl filed a report with Steubenville City Police last September and the case was handed over to Federal Agents. The investigation remains open.

She told of a night in which she drank from a red solo cup and became intoxicated to such an extent she was unable to prevent the alleged assault from taking place.

One law enforcement official described the account as ‘strikingly similar’ to the high profile Steubenville rape.

I didn’t do it!!!!: Charlie Keenan, son of Steubenville prosecutor Jane Hanlin, tweets his innocence in a stream of messages as Big Red athletes discuss what did – and didn’t – happen on that April night

Similarly the tone and content of the April tweets are disturbingly close to those four months later, when Mays and Richmond’s 16-year-old victim was described as ‘sloppy’ and a ‘whore.’

One of the April tweets refers to a situation as ‘messier than that chick who got trained’s (sic) vagina.’

Evan Westlake was present for much of the Mays and Richmond rape and though he admitted to videoing it he was granted immunity in return for testifying in the first trial.

Face of the first scandal: Michael Nodianos, infamous for his video on the night of the first rape, once again makes light of an alleged sexual assaut

Face of the first scandal: Michael Nodianos, infamous for his video on the night of the first rape, once again makes light of an alleged sexual assaut

He is among the tweeters who commented on the April incident. In one tweet he noted: ‘If this was the 70s no one would care how many people were involved.’

But another, unidentified, member of their circle using the screen name Kobe Bryant threatened: ‘If my name gets dragged into anything I’ll be so pissed.’

Fast forward to four months later when members of the ‘Rape Crew’ were filmed crowing about the August rape on the night it took place.

Appalling footage of Michael Nodianos describing the 16-year-old as ‘f***ing deader than JFK’ and giggling hysterically in a vile monologue was posted on Youtube.

Among a diatribe of abuse he said: ‘They raped her harder than that cop raped Marcellus Wallace on Pulp Fiction.’ The film caused such outrage that Nodianos was expelled from Ohio State University and forced to make a grovelling public apology.

Now the footage in which he condemned himself and his friends, may yet play a part in the investigation into the April attack.

Still buzzing: One girl’s life ‘might be ruined’ according to John Linn’s tweets – ‘What a great night!!!’

Strikingly similiar: the tweets from April 2012 echo those that contributed to the evidence against Trent Mays and Ma'lik Richmond when they came to trial in March

Just under seven minutes into his rant Nodianos can be clearly heard comparing the August rape to another incident.

He said: ‘You thought it was bad when that girl got raped at Palooza . This is worse. This is a dead body.’

Palooza is the local nickname for Coach Joe Pierro’s house. He was out of town when the April party at which the alleged rape took place was held.

No charges have yet been brought but this second alleged rape has fallen under the intense scrutiny of the grand jury convened  in the aftermath of Mays’s and Richmond’s conviction.

Amid rumors of institutional cover-up and a widespread loss of faith in the legal system Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine convened the grand jury which first met in April.

It was to be a ‘tool of investigation’ he said seeking out all who could be held accountable for obstructing the legal process that ultimately brought Richmond and Mays to trial and for allowing the harassment of the victim to carry on unchecked.

Mr DeWine vowed that the grand jury would ‘follow the evidence’ wherever it took them.  Two of the City officials indicted as a result of the grand jury’s investigations are facing charges relating to this first alleged rape.

Steubenville City Schools Superintendent, Michael McVey, is facing three felony counts and two misdemeanors for tampering with evidence, obstructing justice, falsification and obstructing official business. All encompass acts alleged to have been carried out ‘on or about April 5 2012.’

Elementary School Principal Lynnett Gorman, wife of Steubenville High School Vice Principal Ted Gorman, faces a charge of failing to immediately report child abuse or neglect ‘on or about April 12, 2012,’ when she had ‘reasonable cause to suspect based on facts that would cause a reasonable person in a similar position to suspect,’ that such abuse had taken place to a child under the age of 18.

The tweets seen by MailOnline date between 8th and 10th April 2012.

Following the evidence: Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine, left, announces the indictments that resulted from the grand jury’s investigations. Among them was Steubenville City Schools Superintendent, Mike McVey, right

Speaking out after during the trial in March, Steubenville police chief William McCafferty admitted, ‘The thing I found most disturbing about this is that there were other people around when this was going on. Nobody had the morals to say, “Hey, stop it, that isn’t right.”’

That culpability, according to Mr DeWine, extended not only to the perpetrators on the night but to the adults and officials who stood idly by as the rape victim was picked apart online and through social media, and chatter found its way from the internet into the halls and classrooms of Steubenville High School.

Speaking to MailOnline Attorney Bob Fitzsimmons who represented the first victim and is now attorney to the second said he could not comment on the particulars of the case, but welcomed the indictments relating to it.

He said: ‘I’m not surprised at all at the individuals or the charges brought against them by the grand jury.’

He would not be drawn on whether or not he hoped or expected investigations into the April incident to lead to prosecutions but he noted: ‘Criminal charges are not pursued by families or individuals so even if you have a reluctant witness the state has the right to pursue if they see fit.’

He added that those granted immunity at the earlier trial had no guarantee of that same privilege in any other proceedings.

He said: ‘General immunity doesn’t mean you get a free walk for the rest of your life.’ In the same way, he said: ‘A girl being so drunk that she cannot consent or otherwise doesn’t give you a free pass to rape her.’

Another Rape in #Richmond Involving Teenagers and Alcohol?

Image

Three teenage boys have been arrested on rape charges after two girls reported they had gotten drunk, passed out and were sexually assaulted in a secluded portion of Wildcat Canyon Regional Park, according to the East Bay Regional Park District police.

Lt. Jon King issued a statement Friday saying the teens – one 15-year-old and two 17-year-olds – were arrested on Thursday with the help of Richmond police. They were booked at the Contra Costa County Juvenile Hall on several charges, including rape, oral copulation, rape in concert with officers and conspiracy.

The charges stem from the evening of Nov. 29. The girls – ages 14 and 17 – told police the next day that they had gone to the park with the teenage boys, who gave them alcohol to drink. The girls told authorities they passed out, and when they regained consciousness, they had been sexually assaulted.

They went to the hospital and told police.

King said that authorities served search warrants at the boys’ homes and recovered evidence related to the assault. They did not describe what the evidence was.

The city of Richmond is forever marred by a another high-profile gang rape in 2009, where a 16-year-old girl was assaulted by as many as 20 men outside Richmond High School’s homecoming dance.

In August, Jose Montano, 22, of Richmond, received the maximum sentence of 33 years to life while his co-defendant Marcelles Peter, 20, was sentenced to 29 years to life. Two men took a plea deal. Two more are awaiting trial.

At the sentencing hearing, Judge Barbara Zuniga told Montano she would have given him more time if she could “because what he did was despicable.”

The Wildcat Canyon assault remains under investigation. Anyone with information should call the East Bay Regional Parks Police investigations unit at 510-690-6555.

U.S Soldier raped at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center #rapeculture #military

Anonymous, United States Army

I am stationed at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Bethesda, originally from New Jersey. I never said anything  about this because I was embarrassed because I broke down and took a plea deal where he plead guilty to adultery.

He was supposed to receive a letter of reprimand, to be confined for 45 days, to undergo 45 days of hard labor, to be restricted for 45 days, and to be reduced in rank to E-3. ..well I JUST now got an email from the Department of the Navy stating he was administratively discharged on 12 April 2013. And that “although I am approving this sentence, no hard labor without confinement or period of restriction was initiated prior to administrative separation” …an email 6 months after the fact, with a letter that was dated 26 April, basically saying “Oh, I’m sorry, he only did half of his punishment.”Which was an already reduced punishment in my opinion for what I’ve gone through because of him! ..I’m not sure what you can do with this information, but I figure someone should hear this besides the people he that have done NOTHING for me. I HOPE YOU CAN USE THIS STORY FOR SOMETHING GOOD!

On September 9, 2011 I lost all my trust in the military. That’s the night I decided to go out with someone I met through work, HM2, USN. I had worked with HM2 for a few weeks when he asked me to go with him and a few other co-workers to celebrate his last weekend in Bethesda. I agreed to this because I was under the impression it was going to be a group gathering. I wrote my phone number down on a piece of paper for him to contact me with the details, I was only told it was going to be a Friday night. He never contacted me but instead just showed up to my place of duty and offered to give me a ride to Downtown DC where we were to meet the others. No one else ended up showing up but I stayed and we danced at a few different clubs.

That night ended in a hotel room that I do not remember getting to. Between that moment and the next morning, I have hazy, intermittent memories of him having sex with me. The next morning I tried to forget it ever happened, I wanted to forget I ever met him. But that is when he continuously placed phone calls to my place of duty and even went as far as to drive 45 minutes out of his way to, I believe, intimidate me. The last phone call he placed is when I was blindsided with the information that this person is married, has three children, and has herpes. I wanted this to all go away, to forget it ever happened, but he chose to, once again, do the wrong thing.

I feel betrayed in two ways: I feel betrayed as a woman and I feel betrayed by the Navy as a soldier. I am 23 years old, hardworking, intelligent, and caring. I would never hurt someone on purpose. I would never maliciously attack, violate, or intimidate someone. Joining the Army is the only thing that has taken me away from home. I feel like some of my innocence was lost. The fact that I cannot remember getting to the hotel room has made me very depressed and has left me crippled with anxiety. Most of the anxiety stems from the fact that I cannot remember what happened, playing it back in my mind, wondering if just would have done “this” or “that”…maybe he wouldn’t have done this to me.

Sometimes I wake up out of my sleep, panicking, and lock myself in the bathroom until I can calm myself down. Other times I dream that I am trying to scream for help, but no noise comes out of my mouth. I feel so disgusting and horrible. This person also put me at risk of contracting an incurable disease. Thankfully, I have tested negative for herpes. During the time all of this happened I was taking two college classes. I received my first “D” and second “C” in my academic career. My goal in September 2011 was to get my Bachelor’s degree in Medical Imaging by January 2013. I also had specific goals to reach professionally, but I have yet to get that motivation back.

As a soldier, we are taught that being a Non-Commissioned Officer is an honor and a privilege bestowed upon those who earn it. That it’s a position held by someone who has not only proven themselves as a soldier, but as a leader. An NCO swears to “at all times conduct one’s self so as to bring credit upon the Corps, the military service, and their country” and to “never compromise their integrity”…but HM2 chose to bring shame to the military and himself. An NCO is something that I whole-heartedly aspired to be before this happened; now, I struggle with my motivation to continue to reach my goals and I no longer want to re-enlist and be a career soldier. This has affected not only me but my work place at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Radiology Department.

This “NCO” – HM2 – showed up to the Radiology department multiple times after he PCS’d down to Fort Belvoir Community Hospital. The first two times I didn’t say anything. Then he called. And after I found out he was married he showed up again after calling a few times. All of this calling and showing up to work made me nervous and not a productive member of the team. And the phone calls took time that none of us had because we are a very busy department. The last time he showed up to work was a Friday, which is a flight night for us, we are busy. When I told a co-worker to ask him to leave he didn’t leave. So I waited about 15 minutes and he was still there. That’s when my co-worker got my Army NCO, SGT and I told him what happened and that HM2 needed to leave.

At that point three productive members to the Radiology team, on one of the busiest nights, were unavailable because HM2 would not leave. Not only were we unavailable for a portion of the night, I had to leave for the remainder of the shift because SGT told me to leave and go to a friend’s house to be safe. I was grilled and interrogated as if I had been the one who had done wrong, then I was given the run-around as to whom my counsel was and what, if any, progress was being made with this case. I can’t help but feel this is a systematic process that weeds out the faint of heart and tries to scare victims of assault into thinking that there isn’t a chance in hell that justice will be brought forth and they will be protected.

I gave my blessing for this plea deal because after 16 months, I cannot endure anymore. I have been treated like a criminal. I was re-victimized by Navy JAG officers who berated me for wanting to get an order of protection from this person who had already shown behavior that would warrant one. I would not have been put in this situation and treated the way I have been for the past 16 months had it not been for HM2’s actions the night of September 9, 2011 and thereafter with him showing up to work.
